The Watergate Files (Ford Presidential Library & Museum)

The Watergate Files

from The Gerald Ford Presidential Library & Museum

"After June 17, 1972, the word "Watergate" could no longer be just the name of an office and hotel complex in Washington, D.C. On that date it became a byword for political corruption.
In the early hours of that mid-June morning, and in the middle of a presidential campaign, five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters located in one of the Watergate offices.
The details of this story would form an ever-rising pool of political deceit in which swirled a constitutional crisis that claimed a presidency."

Nixon Visits China

from The Nixon Presidential Library & Museum

"President Nixon's trip to China in 1972 ended twenty-five years of isolation between the United States and the People's Republic of China (PRC) and resulted in establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1979.

Listen to Nixon discuss his rationale for the trip, the arrival of the pandas at the National Zoo, and his reasoning for the importance of restoring communications with the People's Republic of China."
