Operation Desert Storm

Operation Desert Storm

From The National Security Archive, George Washington University.

"During the early morning hours (Baghdad time) of January 17, 1991, the United States and its allies initiated Operation Desert Storm in accord with United Nations resolutions and U.S. government policy directives that authorized the use of force to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait.  The National Security Archive ihas placed a collection of declassified and unclassified documents concerning Desert Storm on its web site.  The documents primarily focus on the intelligence, space support, Scud-hunting, and stealth (F-117A) elements of the conflict.

These documents provide information on:

  • possible Iraqi actions, including the attempted destruction of Kuwaiti oil fields, which a secret Presidential directive stipulated would lead the U.S. to seek and replace Saddam Hussein

  • lessons learned from the attempts to find and destroy Iraqi Scud missiles

  • the role of a variety of space systems, including the Defense Support Program launch detection satellites, in support of the ground and air wars

  • the debriefing of Iraqi emigres and defectors in support of targeting

  • how China's People's Liberation Army has responded to the lessons of Desert Storm."

    The Cartoon in Wartime Propaganda

    The Cartoon in Wartime Propaganda

from King's College, University of London & The Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives

This exhibition explores the role of the cartoon in wartime propaganda - to sustain civilian morale, encourage army recruitment and strengthen the relationships between Britain and her allies.
Among dozens of dramatic images, mainly drawn from the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College London, are copies of French posters from the Boer War, 1899-1901, and artwork belonging to Edwin Embleton, Studio Manager at the Ministry of Information during the Second World War.

The Falklands War: CCBH Witness Seminar

    The Falklands War

from The Witness Seminars by the Centre for Contemporary British History.

    Requires free registration

    "What is a witness seminar?

Since its founding in 1986, the Institute of Contemporary British History (ICBH), now known as the Centre for Contemporary British History, has been uniquely associated with the production of 'witness seminars' on events or developments which have taken place within the bounds of living memory.

These exercises in oral history involve asking key participants to meet around the seminar table to discuss and debate the issues surrounding the chosen topic as they remember them. Witness seminars thus operate as group interviews, chaired by a senior academic, which are taped and transcribed primarily for the use of researchers.

The CCBH witness seminars are widely regarded by contemporary historians and social scientists as among the most useful and innovative forms of oral history. They often prove to be of more value than one-on-one interviews because of the interaction between witnesses stimulated during these discussions. They have been adopted by other institutions, both in Britain and abroad, and the CCBH has regularly collaborated with scholars from other institutions in planning and hosting witness seminars of particular relevance to their work."

The Battle that Frightened Churchill: The War in the Atlantic

The Battle that Frightened Churchill: The War in the Atlantic

    Podcast from The National Archives

"On 3 September 1939, the passenger liner Athenia was sunk by U30. So began the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest and most complex campaign of the Second World War. The battle pitted the submariners of the Kriegsmarine against the Allied merchant fleet who were providing Britain's vital life line. This talk follows the changes in fortune of both the Kriegsmarine and the merchant fleet, and explains why Winston Churchill knew that the Battle of the Atlantic was the battle that Britain could not afford to lose."
