NEW - HumBox: online resources & teaching materials

Welcome to HumBox - HumBox

"HumBox - a new repository to share, store, manage and repurpose teaching materials from across the Humanities was launched today at the Humanities Research Institute at the University of Sheffield.
The repository has been developed by a partnership of four subject centres: English, History, LLAS and PRS and eleven institutional partners. It is funded by JISC and the HEA.
HumBox already contains over 1000 resources all uploaded using Creative Commons licences. Resources range from simple handouts to more complex learning objects as well as audio and video resources. The repository includes a simple commenting function so that users can leave feedback on the resources. Users have a profile page to promote their own research and teaching. They can set up collections of related resources and include descriptions to ensure that they are more usable for teaching.
HumBox has been closed during the development phase of the project but is now open to all. So please get sharing!"

Black Europeans - features hosted by The British Library

Black Europeans:

A series of features guest-curated by Mike Phillips for the British Library Online Gallery.

Popular versions of history have all too often airbrushed out the contribution of non-Europeans to Western arts and sciences. In recent years, however, scholars have begun to challenge the idea that race or ethnicity is a barrier which can stop individuals from participating in any culture they choose. In Europe this has encouraged a new drive to explore and understand the hidden or ignored contribution of people of African descent to the mainstream of European culture and society.

The figures featured in Black Europeans – Alexander Pushkin, Alexandre Dumas, George Polgreen Bridgetower, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and John Archer.

The exhibition contains images, sound and historical interpretation. Mike Phillips' features on each 'Black European' can also be viewed, saved and/or printed in pdf format.

The 1916 Rising in Ireland

The 1916 Rising:

The National Library of Ireland’s online exhibition The 1916 Rising: Personalities and Perspectives. This study resource draws almost exclusively upon the collections of the National Library, including the Library’s rich holdings of books, newspapers, photographs, drawings, proclamations and, not least, manuscript material. In all, over 500 images have been selected for study and analysis.

Through the medium of contemporary documents, The 1916 Rising: personalities and perspectives focuses upon those who set the stage for the events of Easter Week 1916, the seven signatories of the proclamation, the others executed in the aftermath of the Rising, the casualties and the survivors.

Impact of the Second World War (UK)

Impact of the Second World War

1 in 5 people alive today lived through the Second World War. Although the war ended over 60 years ago, it lives on in people’s memories and family histories, in the UK’s rebuilt city centres and ‘new towns’, and in our education, social and health services. Through a mixture of personal stories, reminiscences and previously unseen archive images, objects and film footage, this award-winning online exhibition explores how the war changed the people and the landscape of the UK forever.
